US Sales Tax FAQ

Why are you collecting sales tax now?

The Supreme Court has sided with states to allow them to collect Sales Tax from online merchants such as Creative Market. Over time, the industry will move to collect Sales Tax to be in compliance, or face penalties.


I work with an organization that is tax-exempt. Can I opt out of paying Sales Tax?

At this time, we have no means to provide exemption, but we are considering if this is possible in the future.


In which states are you collecting Sales Tax?

At this time, Creative Market is collecting Sales Tax from US buyers in the following states:

How much Sales Tax do you charge?

The amount of Sales Tax that will be charged depends on the state and zip code where you are located. Check with your state's tax authorities to learn more about the rate of Sales Tax to expect for online purchases. You can also learn more in this article.


As a buyer, how will I know what the total price of a product— including tax— will be before I purchase?

The prices shown on Creative Market products do not include tax. The total price, including an estimate of the Sales Tax based on your billing location (and the ability to adjust your billing location, will be shown in the purchase flow before you confirm your order. 


Does Creative Market collect Sales Tax for customers in other countries?

Yes; in the EU and in select countries such as Australia and Singapore, we collect VAT / GST

We will also be expanding to other jurisdictions in the future as we comply with local laws.


Will Sales Tax be shown on 1099s and 1042s?

No; Sales Tax is not collected from Shop Owner earnings. Because Sales Tax is not an income tax, amounts collected will not appear on US tax forms


As a Shop Owner, are my earnings affected by Sales Tax?

No; Sales Tax is not part of your earnings calculation.


Who will remit the sales tax collected?

Creative Market determines, collects, and remits Sales Tax for all purchases.

No, Sales Tax is not part of your earnings calculation.


Will I be charged Sales Tax when I purchase credits packages?

No; Creative Market does not charge Sales Tax when you purchase a credits package. However, when you use your credits to purchase products, Sales Tax will be charged on those purchases.


If I make a purchase using credits or un-withdrawn earnings, do I have to pay sales tax?

Yes. Regardless of whether you’re using a Credit Card or Creative Market Credits to pay for your product order, you will be charged Sales Tax for product purchase(s) if you are located in a state in this list.


As a Shop Owner, how do I find out what Sales Tax rate my buyers will be charged?

The Sales Tax, VAT, or GST rate your customers will be charged depends on your customer's billing location (including country, state, and ZIP code). This information is not shared with Shop Owners. Please note that Sales Tax of any kind that is paid by your customers will have no effect on your earnings. Your earnings will not be increased if your customer pays Sales Tax.
